The Weltacker Youth Council

About the Youth Council

Since 2022, the Weltacker Youth Council has been working with us—an exciting project that brings young people in Berlin together. They all share one goal: a voice in Berlin’s food policy!

What exactly is this about?

In recent years, our young members have shown why it’s so important to change our food system. They’ve come up with their own ideas on how everyone can have a say when it comes to the future of our food system. One highlight: A report outlining their demands was presented to the Berlin Senate—a powerful statement in favor of greater participation! Now we’re moving forward! The Youth Council is launching a new project, this time focusing on a socially just food system. The group wants to find out how they can take action themselves, what challenges lie ahead, and how a food system that’s fair for everyone can be created. In addition, the goal is to motivate even more young adults to advocate for the food transition as well. Thanks to funding from the “Zukunftspaket,” many exciting activities have been planned for 2024. For example, participants are conducting interviews with other young people, creating creative “mental maps,” and organizing an impressive art exhibition. A highlight is their homemade cooking cargo bike, which they bring along to events—complete with delicious “Küfa” (kitchen for everyone). A trip to inspiring food projects in southern Germany also sparked many new ideas. The project will conclude with a major event on December 14 at Subversiv e. V. With electronic music, delicious food, and an art exhibition, these dedicated young people aim to showcase their work and recruit more like-minded allies. The Weltacker Youth Council is committed to amplifying the voices of younger generations in the food transition. With creative ideas and strong dedication, the group is making an important contribution to greater social justice in Berlin’s food system.

The Weltacker Youth Council at the Weltacker's season opener!

Created by Jamie vom Weltacker-Jugendrat -

The farming season has begun!

On May 17, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the grand season opening took place at the approximately 2,000 m² Weltacker Berlin in the Botanischer Volkspark Pankow.

The Weltacker Youth Council was represented by by far the most colorful table, where we offered an interactive tablecloth. On it, visitors could write down their demands regarding food policy. We had brought along various questions to spark exciting conversations about food-related topics.

A New Position Paper

This year, the Weltacker Youth Council is focusing on compiling and further developing policy demands related to food policy.

In 2022, the Weltacker Youth Council drafted a policy paper on food policy and submitted it to the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development, Housing, and Community Affairs (UMVK) in December 2022. In light of the planet’s planetary boundaries being exceeded and current crises, the Youth Council calls for immediate political action to establish a healthy and sustainable food system. Berlin must recognize the existing potential for a food system transformation and take the lead as a pioneer. To continue putting pressure on policymakers, the policy paper will now be further revised and updated so that it can be resubmitted to policymakers.

Your Opinions Directly into Policy

Collecting these nutrition-related responses, opinions, and ideas was not only fascinating to observe; they will also help us in the future to gather and further develop the public’s demands and present them to policymakers.

The season opener isn’t going to be the last event where you’ll have the chance to participate in the food transition with your demands! On September 14, the Weltacker Youth Council is planning a big day of action at Tempelhofer Feld! In addition to our interactive tablecloth, there will be several other creative activities. Among other things, we’re planning a color-printing activity using the cyanotype method on jute bags. Bring old T-shirts and fabric, and we’ll spruce them up together! There will also be another delicious community meal made from rescued food, and other great activities are in the works!

In addition to the Weltacker Youth Council, Foodsharing was also on site with a booth at the Weltacker’s season kickoff, offering delicious rescued food. Our booth also served as a networking opportunity, and we made some great connections.

Despite the somewhat chilly and rainy weather, we didn’t let it dampen our spirits and made the best of it. At the end of the day, carrying the donated plants for the Weltacker together really warmed us all up.

All in all, it was a successful day full of dialogue, networking, and commitment to sustainable food policy!
