The Weltacker Youth Council

About the Youth Council

Since 2022, the Weltacker Youth Council has been working with us—an exciting project that brings young people in Berlin together. They all share one goal: a voice in Berlin’s food policy!

What exactly is this about?

In recent years, our young members have shown why it’s so important to change our food system. They’ve come up with their own ideas on how everyone can have a say when it comes to the future of our food system. One highlight: A report outlining their demands was presented to the Berlin Senate—a powerful statement in favor of greater participation! Now we’re moving forward! The Youth Council is launching a new project, this time focusing on a socially just food system. The group wants to find out how they can take action themselves, what challenges lie ahead, and how a food system that’s fair for everyone can be created. In addition, the goal is to motivate even more young adults to advocate for the food transition as well. Thanks to funding from the “Zukunftspaket,” many exciting activities have been planned for 2024. For example, participants are conducting interviews with other young people, creating creative “mental maps,” and organizing an impressive art exhibition. A highlight is their homemade cooking cargo bike, which they bring along to events—complete with delicious “Küfa” (kitchen for everyone). A trip to inspiring food projects in southern Germany also sparked many new ideas. The project will conclude with a major event on December 14 at Subversiv e. V. With electronic music, delicious food, and an art exhibition, these dedicated young people aim to showcase their work and recruit more like-minded allies. The Weltacker Youth Council is committed to amplifying the voices of younger generations in the food transition. With creative ideas and strong dedication, the group is making an important contribution to greater social justice in Berlin’s food system.

Weltacker 2GO in Pankow – Education That Makes a Difference

Training for Outreach Volunteers with Weltacker Mannheim

How much farmland does your lunch actually require? And what does a buffet have to do with climate protection?
On July 7, 2025, Berlin’s Weltacker transformed into a vibrant space for learning and discovery: Together with Weltacker Mannheim, we hosted the “Weltacker 2GO” workshop—a mobile educational format that brings our Weltacker vision to life on a small scale.

More than 20 educators, volunteers, and curious participants came together to learn, experiment, and network.

From the Field to the Road

The idea behind Weltacker 2GO is as simple as it is effective: Using easily transportable materials—such as a 5.5 m² tarp, a “surface buffet,” or a CO₂ barometer—you can strike up a conversation with people anywhere. Whether at festivals, in schools, or at the next neighborhood festival: The Weltacker topics can be conveyed anywhere—in a way that’s understandable, vivid, and interactive.

To kick off the training, we took a tour of the 2,000-square-meter Weltacker. Amid the corn, millet, and cotton, we talked about global land justice, food security, and how all of this relates to us.

Then we moved on to the basics: What does Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) actually mean? How does global learning work? And how can we truly inspire people to think and take action?

Materials, Methods, Get Involved

Then it got hands-on: The participants got to know all the Weltacker 2GO stations—and tried them out for themselves right away. The “land buffet” was particularly popular; it allows people to compare how much farmland a cheese sandwich requires compared to a veggie schnitzel. The CO₂ barometer also sparked exciting discussions: Which foods actually leave which carbon footprints?

The topics included legumes as climate savers, the Planetary Health Diet as a model for the future for 10 billion people, and the question of how we can understand, explain, and collectively reduce food waste.

The training session was not only informative but also creative, open, and warm. For many participants, it was their first time in a field.

Three Words That Stick With You

To wrap things up, we asked everyone to share three words that came to mind after the workshop. And the answer was clear:
inspiration, motivation, joy—but also “advancing global learning.”
