Water is life—but it is not always readily available everywhere. In the project “Water Connects—Worldwide!”, we are working together with Amanuel Samuel from the Ethiopian Weltacker in Gidole to address the challenges surrounding water, agriculture, and climate resilience.
The one-year project is funded by the State Office for Development Cooperation
(LEZ, Nord-Süd-Brücken) and the Development Education Funding Program (FEB, Engagement Global), and brings people from Berlin and Ethiopia together—with the goal of learning from one another and developing solutions together.
The focus is on the following questions:
→ How does water management work around the world?
→ Which plants are particularly climate-resilient?
→ How can we address the challenges of climate change?
To this end, we’re working together to develop a concept for a “Water Farm Tour” that can take place in both Berlin and Gidole. The tour will illustrate the water cycle, how it’s being disrupted by climate change, and what measures can help ensure the sustainable use of water.
Workshops with high school classes not only impart knowledge—they also facilitate a direct exchange between young people from Berlin and Gidole. This results in video tutorials on climate-resilient crops and simple irrigation techniques that share knowledge across national borders.
For educators and ESD coordinators, there is a training session featuring a live video call with Amanuel. During the session, participants cook together, discuss climate adaptation—and even make their own irrigation pots (ollas).
Since 2022, the Weltacker Youth Council has been working with us—an exciting project that brings young people in Berlin together. They all share one goal: a voice in Berlin’s food policy!
