The Weltacker Youth Council

About the Youth Council

Since 2022, the Weltacker Youth Council has been working with us—an exciting project that brings young people in Berlin together. They all share one goal: a voice in Berlin’s food policy!

What exactly is this about?

In recent years, our young members have shown why it’s so important to change our food system. They’ve come up with their own ideas on how everyone can have a say when it comes to the future of our food system. One highlight: A report outlining their demands was presented to the Berlin Senate—a powerful statement in favor of greater participation! Now we’re moving forward! The Youth Council is launching a new project, this time focusing on a socially just food system. The group wants to find out how they can take action themselves, what challenges lie ahead, and how a food system that’s fair for everyone can be created. In addition, the goal is to motivate even more young adults to advocate for the food transition as well. Thanks to funding from the “Zukunftspaket,” many exciting activities have been planned for 2024. For example, participants are conducting interviews with other young people, creating creative “mental maps,” and organizing an impressive art exhibition. A highlight is their homemade cooking cargo bike, which they bring along to events—complete with delicious “Küfa” (kitchen for everyone). A trip to inspiring food projects in southern Germany also sparked many new ideas. The project will conclude with a major event on December 14 at Subversiv e. V. With electronic music, delicious food, and an art exhibition, these dedicated young people aim to showcase their work and recruit more like-minded allies. The Weltacker Youth Council is committed to amplifying the voices of younger generations in the food transition. With creative ideas and strong dedication, the group is making an important contribution to greater social justice in Berlin’s food system.

Our wormhole is back—and more beautiful than ever!

Unraveling the Mystery of the Soil

What do a wormhole in the universe and the Weltacker’s mobile “wormhole” have in common? Both open up access to a hidden world. But while one leads to distant galaxies, our wormhole opens our view downward—directly into the captivating universe of the soil.

Countless organisms live there—from springtails to fungal networks—that form the foundation of our food supply, our climate, and a healthy environment. Yet much of what happens in the soil remains invisible to us—and thus often goes unnoticed. This is exactly where our wormhole comes in: it makes the invisible visible, audible, and tangible.

With its playful exterior and scientifically grounded interior, it invites people of all ages to experience the soil with all their senses. The mobile tent brings microscopes, soundscapes, and “aha” moments to every corner of the city—and impressively demonstrates just how much life is teeming beneath our feet.

Where would we be without you?

In October 2024, the loss of our beloved mobile wormhole hit us hard. After a successful season full of outdoor adventures across Berlin, it fell victim to the fire at the Ackerhaus. But now there’s good news: Thanks to the generous support of the Stiftung am Grunewald, we were able to build a new wormhole—and artist Marie Basten has once again lovingly designed it!

The Wandering Wormhole

The Wormhole is at the heart of our educational project, “The Wormhole on the Move: Exploring Soil Biodiversity with Berliners of All Ages,” and helps people understand the soil as a fascinating and endangered ecosystem. It tours Berlin events and invites visitors to experience the soil with all their senses:

  • Listen to sounds from deep underground via a soil microphone
  • Examine microorganisms under a microscope
  • and yes—even taste it, if you dare!

Whether at the Environment Festival, the Long Night of Science, or the Harvest Festival—the Wormhole captivates audiences with its playful yet scientifically sound approach to sharing knowledge and raises awareness of the importance of soil biodiversity in global agriculture.
