Sometimes it’s worth taking a little break from hard work—especially when there’s something to celebrate: Weltacker Berlin e. V. was awarded the 2025 Berlin Nature Conservation Prize in the “Institution” category!
The award was presented on July 23 by the Berlin Nature Conservation Foundation in the atmospheric setting of the ufaFabrik. We were recognized for our commitment to sustainable, accessible, and hands-on educational work on agriculture, food, global justice, and resource conservation.
In her laudatory speech, Linda Vierecke, a member of the Berlin House of Representatives, summed up our goal:
“With a very simple concept, the Weltacker manages to make a massive topic understandable.”
What began years ago with a 2,000-square-meter plot of farmland in Gatow and later in Pankow has since doubled in size: As of this year, there is also the Ackerlabor on the grounds of the Späth Nursery in Treptow-Köpenick. There, we teach sustainable agriculture using methods from around the world—from climate beds to mixed cropping. Both sites are vibrant learning environments and gathering places for school classes, neighborhoods, and curious people of all ages.
What sometimes gets overlooked with an award like this is what matters most to us: Without the many volunteers, the Weltacker wouldn’t be what it is today. They weed, dig, lead tours, brave the rain, fix things, build raised beds, and consistently bring a breath of fresh air to our project. This award is also a heartfelt thank you to them—from the bottom of our hearts.
…and to the other award winners as well, especially “Coolen Kids Rap,” whose performance at the awards ceremony really gave us goosebumps. That’s how you combine nature conservation with a beat!
Since 2022, the Weltacker Youth Council has been working with us—an exciting project that brings young people in Berlin together. They all share one goal: a voice in Berlin’s food policy!
