The Weltacker Youth Council

About the Youth Council

Since 2022, the Weltacker Youth Council has been working with us—an exciting project that brings young people in Berlin together. They all share one goal: a voice in Berlin’s food policy!

What exactly is this about?

In recent years, our young members have shown why it’s so important to change our food system. They’ve come up with their own ideas on how everyone can have a say when it comes to the future of our food system. One highlight: A report outlining their demands was presented to the Berlin Senate—a powerful statement in favor of greater participation! Now we’re moving forward! The Youth Council is launching a new project, this time focusing on a socially just food system. The group wants to find out how they can take action themselves, what challenges lie ahead, and how a food system that’s fair for everyone can be created. In addition, the goal is to motivate even more young adults to advocate for the food transition as well. Thanks to funding from the “Zukunftspaket,” many exciting activities have been planned for 2024. For example, participants are conducting interviews with other young people, creating creative “mental maps,” and organizing an impressive art exhibition. A highlight is their homemade cooking cargo bike, which they bring along to events—complete with delicious “Küfa” (kitchen for everyone). A trip to inspiring food projects in southern Germany also sparked many new ideas. The project will conclude with a major event on December 14 at Subversiv e. V. With electronic music, delicious food, and an art exhibition, these dedicated young people aim to showcase their work and recruit more like-minded allies. The Weltacker Youth Council is committed to amplifying the voices of younger generations in the food transition. With creative ideas and strong dedication, the group is making an important contribution to greater social justice in Berlin’s food system.

Climate Strike on Valentine's Day – Our Date with the Future

Created by Adelina Uhl -

Berlin, February 14, 2025

On February 14, it was that time again: the Global Climate Strike!

Under the slogan “My Date with the Future,” around 10,000 people took to the streets in Berlin on Valentine’s Day to send a strong message for climate justice. We from the Weltacker Youth Council were there too—this time not in the march, but with our own information booth right on the scene.

Why We, as the Youth Council, Were There

We are committed to a sustainable, future-proof world, and we see it very clearly:
food, agriculture, and consumer behavior play a central role in climate protection.
Our message: Every plate is political. Through our daily decisions, we influence the climate, the environment, and global justice.

That’s why it was important to us not just to march in the demonstration, but to talk to people, share information about alternatives, and build connections—with other young people, activists in the movement, and anyone who wanted to learn more about our work.

What We Did

At our booth, we offered sandwiches with vegan spreads and fresh banana bread—free and eco-friendly!
We also provided information about the Youth Council, the Weltacker project, and, of course, our current initiatives.

The photo shows the Weltacker Youth Council’s information table. On the table are various flyers, informational materials, and a position paper from the Weltacker Youth Council. A colorful banner reading “RAUPE NIMMERSATT” stands out. There are also slices of bread with toppings available for tasting. The booth provides information on sustainable nutrition and encourages people to get involved.

Our new banners were a real highlight: handmade from upcycled banner fabric and spray-painted with powerful slogans about food and systemic change—creative, loud, colorful, and political.

Our Topics at Fridays for Future

Many of the demands made by Fridays for Future also directly affect our work:

  • Climate protection and the end of fossil fuels

  • Transformation of agriculture and food
      systems
  • More climate protection in agriculture—including through the expansion of organic farming

We stand behind these goals—and are doing our part through our focus on food sovereignty, education, and political engagement.

The photo shows the FFF climate strike in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Two youth activists stand in the foreground holding a colorful poster that reads, “RAUPE NIMMERSATT is dismantling the food system!” More demonstrators can be seen in the background. Another sign bears the message “Food System Transformation Now – WJR.” The atmosphere appears passionate and peaceful.

Meaningful Conversations & New Connections

We were especially pleased to have substantive discussions with interested participants. There were many engaging conversations—about agriculture, consumerism, our work on the Youth Council, and how we can bring about change together.
We hope that some of these new connections will endure and continue to grow.

Thank you for this wonderful day!

A huge thank you to:
Fridays for Future Berlin for their excellent organization
; Patagonia, who supported
us in this event; and all the visitors who stopped by, joined the discussion, or grabbed a sandwich

We’re more motivated than ever—for real change in the fields and on the streets!

Thanks to funding from the “Zukunftspaket,” we were able to carry out this event!
