The Weltacker Youth Council

About the Youth Council

Since 2022, the Weltacker Youth Council has been working with us—an exciting project that brings young people in Berlin together. They all share one goal: a voice in Berlin’s food policy!

What exactly is this about?

In recent years, our young members have shown why it’s so important to change our food system. They’ve come up with their own ideas on how everyone can have a say when it comes to the future of our food system. One highlight: A report outlining their demands was presented to the Berlin Senate—a powerful statement in favor of greater participation! Now we’re moving forward! The Youth Council is launching a new project, this time focusing on a socially just food system. The group wants to find out how they can take action themselves, what challenges lie ahead, and how a food system that’s fair for everyone can be created. In addition, the goal is to motivate even more young adults to advocate for the food transition as well. Thanks to funding from the “Zukunftspaket,” many exciting activities have been planned for 2024. For example, participants are conducting interviews with other young people, creating creative “mental maps,” and organizing an impressive art exhibition. A highlight is their homemade cooking cargo bike, which they bring along to events—complete with delicious “Küfa” (kitchen for everyone). A trip to inspiring food projects in southern Germany also sparked many new ideas. The project will conclude with a major event on December 14 at Subversiv e. V. With electronic music, delicious food, and an art exhibition, these dedicated young people aim to showcase their work and recruit more like-minded allies. The Weltacker Youth Council is committed to amplifying the voices of younger generations in the food transition. With creative ideas and strong dedication, the group is making an important contribution to greater social justice in Berlin’s food system.

A moment of pride for us: Weltacker Berlin e. V. takes 2nd place at the 2026 Environmental Festival

Created by Katharina Rein-Fischböck vom Weltacker Berlin e. V. -

What a day! On Sunday, June 7, 2026, I stood on stage at the Environmental Festival at the Brandenburg Gate alongside Michaela Brockstkothen (our chairwoman) and Karin Pirhofer (our soil expert—hard to believe, but she left the wormhole just for the award ceremony) on stage at the Environmental Festival at the Brandenburg Gate. Together, we accepted second place in the Environmental Festival’s Grand Prix. This award fills us all with great joy and shows us that our work is recognized and valued.

“Climate Crisis, Consumption, and Agriculture”—the core of our work

The laudatory speech was delivered by Wolfgang Oels, the CEO of Ecosia. What made it special was that he had visited our field on the grounds of Späth’s Tree Nurseries the day before and was visibly impressed by how we at Weltacker Berlin bring these three often-separate topics together into a unified whole. At our field, visitors don’t just gain theoretical knowledge—they can experience with all their senses how their food, clothing, transportation, and more are intertwined with climate protection and agriculture. Soil also plays an important role here. For more information on this topic, you’ll have to visit one of our fields—ideally as part of a soil and field tour with Karin ;-)

A call that comes from my heart

However, Wolfgang Oels did not end his speech merely with praise, but with an urgent appeal that is also very important to me personally: “Keep fighting against the development of the Späth Nursery!” As a passionate gardener and environmental activist, I see every day just how precious the remaining green spaces are. Together with our speaker, we, too, are committed to preserving the land at this oldest tree nursery site in Germany and hope to save this piece of land from being paved over. Every square meter counts.

We congratulate the other winners

I would also like to wholeheartedly congratulate the other award winners:

  • First place: Berliner Bäume for their outstanding commitment to our city’s trees.
  • Third place: The initiative that is courageously campaigning against the continued construction of the A100.

We are all working toward a greener, more livable city—one that will still be worth living in 100 years from now. It’s encouraging to know that so many dedicated people and projects are standing by our side.

A huge thank you goes out to all our members, volunteers, and supporters, without whom this day would not have been possible.

Thank you!
