The History of the Project

It all began in 2014 with a small but significant step:

The Weltacker was launched by the Zukunftsstiftung Landwirtschaft and got its start in Berlin-Gatow. In 2017, the project expanded as part of the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) in Berlin-Marzahn. This gave rise to many exciting ideas, such as the wayfinding system, the “field buffet,” and the educational stations, which made the Weltacker even more vibrant. In 2018, the Weltacker found a new home at the Blankenfelde Botanical Public Park. Here, not only did our farm grow, but so did our team—full of dedication and drive. 2022 was a special year: The Weltacker Youth Council was established to actively involve young people, and Global Bean joined us as an important partner. In 2023, we took the next big step: We founded our own association, Weltacker Berlin e. V., and became part of Berlin’s Food Strategy. Since 2024, Weltacker Berlin e. V. has been standing on its own two feet and is independent of the GLS Trust.

Today, there are over 30 Weltäcker across the globe in 10 different countries

Outlook

We look forward to welcoming even more people to our Weltacker in the future. We want to inspire you to think about these issues and invite you to get involved. We have many exciting events planned—both in person and online—as well as new projects. The issue of water is particularly important to us, and we plan to focus more on it in the coming years. We also want our Youth Council to grow so that young people can have an even greater say in Berlin’s food policy. We’re excited about everything that’s to come, and we’d love for you to join us on this journey!
