Details about the process and content of the educational offer

Following the success of the Mannheim Weltacker at BUGA 23 last year, the Eine-Welt-Forum
Mannheim has launched a new project. The Weltacker
2GO’s mobile educational materials are designed to reach new audiences with the Weltacker’s content—at street festivals,
information booths, festivals, or in workshops, participants can explore topics such as global
agriculture, farmland use, food security, and climate change.
As a mobile educational concept, Weltacker 2GO invites people to engage playfully with questions about
sustainable agriculture and food systems and to take
active steps toward sustainable change!

Weltacker 2GO consists of the following components, which can be used together or individually.

5.5 m² tarp:

5.5 m² is the amount of farmland theoretically available to each person per day. This calculation is based on 1.5 billion hectares worldwide and 8 billion people, which amounts to 2,000 m² per year per person (one “Weltacker”) and 5.5 m² per day.
This banner measures 5.5 m² and shows interested visitors which crops are planted on this area.

Land Buffet:

Foods differ in terms of the amount of arable land required for their cultivation. The “Land Buffet” allows various dishes—such as currywurst with fries, a chocolate cookie, or a serving of spaghetti with lentil Bolognese—to be presented according to the amount of arable land they consume.

CO₂
Barometer:

Using a scale, participants can estimate and reflect on the CO₂ emissions (in CO₂ equivalents) of specific foods and dishes.

Planetary Health Diet (PHD):

The so-called Planetary Health Diet is based on the idea of what a diet might look like that enables as many people as possible to eat healthily using the arable land currently available. The material, presented in the form of a plate, illustrates what such a diet might look like.

Legume Dishes Around the World:

Beans, lentils, lupins, and the like are the superheroes
of the field—they provide protein and act as green manure for the soil. Through
small-group activities, participants can learn about various dishes from around
the world.

Food Waste:

A lot of food is thrown away before it even reaches our plates: in the fields where it’s grown, during transport from the fields to stores, in supermarkets, and even in private households. During a small-group activity, participants can find out how much food waste is generated and where.

5.5 m² Equitably Distributed?:

The “Weltacker” thought experiment assumes that all people have equal access to farmland and that its use is distributed evenly among all people worldwide. In reality, however, there are enormous differences in how much farmland people use on average in different regions of the world—due, for example, to lifestyle, prosperity, climate, and so on. We’ll take a closer look at this using this method.

Inspiring Stories from Agriculture Around the World:

There are already many approaches and initiatives that rethink agriculture. Small groups can learn about these through good examples from the Global South and discuss together what we can learn from them.

1, 2, or 3 Quiz:

This guessing game is a great way to engage groups and reinforce the material.
